And the award goes to...

This award season was definitely one for the books for fashion. Between the Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys, Emmys, and other awards we saw lots of different and daring fashion. Some designers even went back as far as the 1600’s for inspiration. Since thete was so much historic influence in some of the best looks from this past award season, here is a little history lesson.

1600’s

Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture

I am absolutely in love with this dress and the designer. The panniers style of this dress shows he went all the way back to the 1600’s for his inspiration. Panniers  (the fullness on the side of the dress) originated in the 17th century, they were normally worn by only with very formal gowns and within court fashion.

Edwardian Period

Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton

The lightweight, sheer fabric of this dress reminds me of the chemise dresses worn in the Edwardian period.

Dakota Johnson in Gucci

Dakota Johnson’s dress looked like it came right of the Edwardian Era. The pale gold silk dress gave a major vintage vibe with the high, ruffled collar, long sleeves and poufy shoulders, the big bow on the front of the dress went right along with the era.

1920’s

Emma Stone in Givenchy

Givenchy did an outstanding job on this dress for her. The ode to the 20s Givenchy gave to this dress is just amazing. This dress makes me think flapper as soon as I see it, which also fits the theme and time period of the movie Emma Stone stared in.

1950’s

Felicity Jones in Christian Dior Couture

Christian Dior has been around since the 50s and his style reflects that very well. This dress reminds me of the dirndl skirts; which were full, mid-calf length skirts, women wore back then.

1980's

Taraji P. Henson in Alberta Ferretti

With the tailored silhouette and the off the shoulder, V-neck neckline, and the dark black or purple, luxurious velvet is just absolutely stunning and very chic on Taraji. This dress is very 80's style.
