How COVID-19 & The Shutdown Will Affect Trends In Fashion

COVID-19, as we all know, is a global pandemic that has shocked the world in many ways. As we have seen in history, monumental events such as the French Revolution or World War II have dramatically impacted trends in how people chose to dress. Today, I will take a look at how COVID-19 could affect the fashion world moving forward. Whether it's trends in personal appearance, such as less beards and long nails due to necessary use of protective gear, or storefronts becoming increasingly rare due to an increase in e-commerce popularity, we will see many effects on the fashion world from this novel virus. Specifically, I want to discuss what new trends may (or may not) emerge because of the virus? I will touch on just two trends that I believe will emerge stronger than before; however, there are countless ideas as to what may come from this. Although we cannot predict anything for certain, I thought it would be worth reflecting on what might emerge in the fashion world as a result of the current pandemic.

TREND #1: "Athleisure"
First and foremost, athleisure isn't going anywhere. In the last few years, athletic wear has taken off as it evolved into not only performance wear, but also comfy clothes for everyday people in their everyday life. It even coined its own term of “athleisure.” After the pandemic, although I believe people will be more than ready to dress up in their best clothes and show off after so long of not being able to leave the house, I also think athleisure is going to be more popular than ever. Quarantine has almost made it even more of a norm than it was becoming before this pandemic. With everyone stuck at home, work clothes have turned to sweatsuits, and going out clothes have turned into pajamas. Essentially, people who didn’t ever dress in the athleisure trend before, have become extremely familiar with it and more than comfortable with it due to quarantine. Although nothing is guaranteed, I would say to get your tracksuits ready ladies and gents!

TREND #2: Masks
Next, I wanna talk about something that is maybe a little more obvious: MASKS. Masks are interesting because they were actually already trending with designer brands BEFORE this pandemic. In Fall and Winter 2019 runway shows, we saw not only protective masks, but also more decorative ones that were simply a fashion statement. I predict that we will see a surge in designer masks popularity as well as smaller fashion brands selling decorative masks as well. It is an interesting and new way to express yourself, as well as a great means of protection.
